When is the Best Time to Surf in Tahiti?
It’s the question every traveler asks us: when should you come to learn surfing in Tahiti? The good news is that French Polynesia is one of the few destinations in the world where you can surf 365 days a year.
However, depending on whether you visit during the austral summer or winter, the experience at Papenoo will be different. Here is our guide to choosing your ideal season.
1. The Austral Summer (November to March): The Season of Smoothness
This is the preferred period for those looking for calm sea conditions and an intense tropical atmosphere.
- The Big Plus: The absence of wind. This is the season when the water is often “glassy” (smooth as a mirror), which makes paddling and balance much easier for a beginner surfer in Tahiti.
- The Swell: It comes from the North. It is constant and very regular. Be aware, however: during major storms, the waves can become quite impressive.
- The Downside: This is the rainy season. After heavy downpours, river water flows into the ocean, which can make the water murkier (brown) at the Papenoo spot. It’s the small price to pay for lush nature and 28°C (82°F) water!
2. The Austral Winter (April to October): The Season of Clarity
This is the “cool” season (although the water rarely drops below 25°C / 77°F).
- The Big Plus: Crystal clear water. Since it rains much less, the water at Papenoo remains clear and limp almost all the time. It’s the perfect season for souvenir photos!
- The Swell: Waves are generated by storms in the Far South. They are extremely frequent. Even if the pros flock to the reefs, the North Coast sand beaches always catch enough waves for plenty of fun.
- The Downside: The Mara’amu (South-East wind). The wind is more present and can make the water surface a bit “choppy.” But don’t worry—for a beginner, this doesn’t stop you from catching great waves!
